Three benefits from shifting to the cloud

We’re making some exciting changes at Wavecrest, modernising our secure and scalable platform to bring cloud communications providers and telecoms operators closer together than ever before.
As part of that transformative process, we’re moving our tech infrastructure to the cloud – setting us up for the future and ensuring we can adapt as industry needs continue to evolve.
Here are three compelling benefits of the cloud that we’ve experienced so far:
- Agility unleashed
Traditionally, telcos have favoured running their own data centre infrastructure because of industry-specific requirements and cost sensitivities. So while the attractions of the cloud have been relevant to some parts of the sector, they haven’t appealed to everyone, especially carriers.
But now the staggering breadth of tools and capabilities, combined with the ease of deployment and automation, are hard to ignore. The recent push towards edge compute, and the relative ease of deploying multi-cloud solutions (we’ve chosen Amazon Web Services (AWS) , Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud ), make the cloud’s agility benefits increasingly irresistible.
- Rapid scalability and flexibility
The ability to switch on capabilities in new locations rapidly, to layer the network so that latency-sensitive workloads are in the right place, and to ensure that data sovereignty is respected, are all challenging to achieve in a self-hosted network. In contrast, the cloud makes them straightforward and encourages innovation. Combine this with some of the new breed of fantastic off-the-shelf components now available (we’ve been really impressed by ClickHouse and qryn for example) and you have a fantastic platform on which to build a network.
- Seamless global integration of cutting-edge solutions
By harnessing the best cloud technologies and software solutions, we’ve built an entirely new edge architecture. It’s extensible and easy to deploy, all in order to provide the best quality voice traffic for our customers and suppliers, wherever they are. We can now deploy a truly global telecoms network on the cloud (which, in reality, means a ‘globally local’ telecoms network). The opportunities are more compelling, and far easier, than they’ve ever been before.
That’s our approach and the benefits we’ve seen so far. Feel free to comment if any of this resonates with you or prompts questions!
